A Coruña hosts cultural and technology professionals to discuss the impact of artificial intelligence on the cultural sector

On October 2, 2026, the Domus in A Coruña is hosting the event 'Periscopio A Coruña: The Role of AI in Cultural and Creative Sectors,' which brings together prominent voices from culture, technology, and innovation to reflect on the challenges and opportunities that artificial intelligence (AI) presents for cultural creation, production, and dissemination.

The initiative is organized by the Fundación Contemporánea with the support of the A Coruña City Council and the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence (AESIA). The event was inaugurated by the city’s Councillor for Culture and Tourism, Gonzalo Castro, and the director of the Fundación Contemporánea, Sara Magán.

During his speech, Castro emphasized the commitment of Inés Rey's government to innovation as a tool to strengthen the city’s cultural ecosystem and promote dialogue on significant contemporary challenges. He stated, “The development of artificial intelligence opens new possibilities for cultural creation and dissemination, but it also raises important ethical, professional, and social questions. It is essential for cities like A Coruña to participate in this debate and contribute to building a responsible use of these technologies in service of culture and knowledge.”

Castro also highlighted that “the celebration of Periscopio reinforces A Coruña’s positioning as an innovative city committed to reflecting on the future of cultural and creative sectors, while also fostering connections between professionals from culture, research, and technology.”

The government’s focus on being leaders in AI regulation is supported by the presence of AESIA in the city. The inaugural conference was delivered by writer and researcher Remedios Zafra, who discussed the relationship between creativity and artificial intelligence in her talk titled “Creating as Work with, in, and Despite Artificial Intelligence.”

Throughout the day, the effects of these tools on cultural production, audience relationships, and artistic creation models will be analyzed. Notable participants include Alberto Gago, director of AESIA; filmmaker and artist Chino Moya; Inmaculada Ballesteros, director of programming at Acción Cultural Española (AC/E); and Óscar Hormigos, creative director of the SOLO Collection, among other specialized voices from the cultural and technological fields.

The program includes debate panels such as “AI, a New Species in the Cultural Ecosystem” and “Co-Creating with AI,” which will examine how these technologies are transforming the ways of creating, producing, managing, and disseminating cultural projects. The event will also feature practical workshops, networking spaces, and experience-sharing sessions among professionals from various disciplines.

Periscopio A Coruña will culminate with the launch of the hackathon “Cultural Creators & Technologists,” an initiative that will bring together multidisciplinary teams until December to develop prototypes and explore practical applications of artificial intelligence in cultural management, content creation, and communication of cultural projects.
