Alicante renovates wooden flooring at 'Pedro Ferrándiz' sports centre

The Alicante City Council has initiated a project to upgrade the wooden flooring at the Pedro Ferrándiz Sports Centre, with a budget of €196,258.37. This renovation aims to improve the facility's suitability for high-level competitions and various events.

Manuel Villar, the city's Sports Councillor, stated, “We continue to renovate a facility with a capacity for 5,000 people to host high-level competitions and major events.” The Pedro Ferrándiz Sports Centre, which opened in 1993, is set to receive a modern parquet floor that meets the standards of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). This new flooring will allow for quick assembly and disassembly, significantly reducing the time currently required to remove the existing floor, which can take several days.

The tender approved by the City Council's Governing Board on Tuesday will cover the supply and installation of a removable wooden sports floor. The new parquet must be certified by FIBA for Level 1 competitive basketball and will include the necessary game lines, branding, and logos as determined by the Sports Department.

Villar highlighted that the flooring replacement represents a significant step in modernising the sports facility. He noted, “The new floor will enhance the agility and usage time of the facility, allowing it to host not only top-level sports competitions but also other major city events that require a large-capacity venue.”

Since the Generalitat transferred the facility to the Alicante City Council, the Pedro Ferrándiz Sports Centre has undergone substantial renovations, including energy efficiency improvements, digitalisation, and accessibility upgrades, valued at €1.5 million. These enhancements were co-financed through the European Next Generation Funds and have resulted in a reduction of electricity costs by 37 to 45%.

Additionally, two high-resolution electronic scoreboards have been installed, each measuring 15 square metres, displaying team names, player statistics, fouls, and advertisements. In compliance with FIBA regulations, three four-sided scoreboards have also been added, providing information on game time and possession.
