Alicante responds to over 50 emergencies following heavy rainfall

The city of Alicante has recorded over 50 interventions by the local fire service (Speis) and the police in response to heavy rainfall exceeding 50 litres per square metre caused by the DANA Adam weather system. The storm affected the municipality between 11 PM and 3 AM on the night of Monday to Tuesday.

The majority of emergency responses were due to traffic disruptions and water entering residential and commercial properties. Notable incidents included the evacuation of a woman from her vehicle and her subsequent transport to her home in the Miriam Blasco area, as well as assistance provided to drivers of five vehicles to move to safety on Avenida de Elche.

Forecasts for Tuesday indicate no further rainfall, allowing for a gradual return to normalcy in the most affected areas, such as the underground passage at Vial Flora de España in La Albufereta and the avenues of Elche and Diputado Antonio García Miralles.

Rain gauges installed at the University of Alicante, the FGV La Marina station, and Tabarca recorded 50 litres per square metre during the storm, which was also accompanied by significant electrical activity. Throughout the night, municipal emergency services monitored water levels in the Rambuchar, Alabastre, Agua Amarga, and Las Ovejas ravines, finding no immediate risks.

Key interventions included checking the condition of the San Rafael Centre for people with disabilities (Santa Faz), where the parking area had flooded but pedestrian access and the interior of the facilities remained unaffected. Traffic disruptions occurred on Avenida de Elche, the underground passage at Vial Flora de España, Pintor Pérez Gil, Diputado Antonio García Miralles, and the La Alcoraya road, alongside various operations in the Miriam Blasco area. Additionally, the storm impacted the electrical supply to traffic lights and cameras, with four technical teams working to restore normal operations throughout Tuesday morning.
