autumn festivities to enjoy in the D.O. Rías Baixas

Galicia is renowned for its passion for food-related festivities, a cultural trait so deeply ingrained that it has even been the subject of academic studies. The Denomination of Origin (D.O.) Rías Baixas, known for its exceptional wines, is no exception. While many summer visitors may believe the celebrations end with the warm season, autumn offers a variety of events worth experiencing, particularly with a glass of Albariño in hand.

As the grape harvest concludes, winemakers shift their focus to fermentation processes and the creation of their exquisite wines. By late September, the frenetic pace of the harvest slows, allowing for celebrations of the bountiful yield. This period is an excellent time to visit local wineries and witness the transformation of grape juice into wine, all set against the stunning backdrop of vineyards transitioning from green to autumnal hues of yellow and brown.

Key autumn festivities in Rías Baixas

1. Festa do Marisco do Grove

Kicking off the autumn celebrations is the Festa do Marisco do Grove, held since 1963 and recognised as a National Tourist Interest Festival. This event takes place over the first two weekends of October, featuring a vast array of seafood tastings in a specially erected marquee and local restaurants. The festival also includes children's activities and a rich musical programme, attracting numerous visitors eager to savour grilled razor clams, steamed mussels, scallops, Galician-style octopus, clams, and seafood rice.

2. Festa dos Callos de Piloño in Vila de Cruces

Also occurring in early October, around the 11th, the parish of Piloño in Vila de Cruces hosts the Festa dos Callos. This gastronomic celebration features the traditional dish of callos as a starter, followed by hearty meat dishes, desserts, and coffee. The local white wines pair beautifully with all courses, including the callos, while robust reds also complement the meal.

3. Otoño Micológico de Vilagarcía de Arousa

Autumn is peak mushroom season in Galicia, known for its abundance of wild fungi. The Otoño Micológico event in Vilagarcía de Arousa showcases various edible mushroom species, such as boletus and chanterelles. Activities throughout November aim to educate participants on identifying and enjoying these culinary delights.

4. Magosto in D.O. Rías Baixas

The Magosto is a deeply rooted tradition celebrated across Galicia, where roasted chestnuts take centre stage. These are typically served alongside a variety of local delicacies, including cheeses, chorizo, tortillas, and grilled meats, all complemented by local wines.

5. Festa do Viño Espumoso D.O. Rías Baixas

On the weekend of the Constitution Day bridge, the Festa do Viño Espumoso D.O. Rías Baixas takes place in Salvaterra do Miño, now in its twelfth edition. This event features local wineries showcasing their sparkling wines, paired with tapas such as empanada and steamed mussels, all under a marquee near the impressive Castle of Doña Urraca.

6. Jornadas de Exaltación de la Centolla in O Grove

Between late November and early December, the Jornadas de Exaltación de la Centolla celebrates the opening of the crab season. Local restaurants offer special menus featuring this prized seafood, complemented by the region's finest wines. The event includes cooking demonstrations and an exciting crab auction, providing a unique experience for visitors.

In the D.O. Rías Baixas, there is no shortage of activities to keep visitors entertained. For those who find autumn long and dreary, these festivities offer a perfect opportunity to explore the region and raise a glass in celebration. Cheers!
