The Estepona Town Hall has announced that the literary presentation of the book ‘Rocío Jurado, la voz que nos hizo sentir libres’ will occur tomorrow, 6 October, at the Biblioteca de Culturas Contemporáneas, located at Mirador del Carmen. The event is set to begin at 20:00 on the sixth floor and will include the presence of the book's editor, Carlos Barea, along with contributions from various authors such as Alberto Conejero, Lidia García García, Supremme de Luxe, Laura Fa, Machús Osinaga, Carlos García de la Vega, and Marta Jaenes. Entry is free until capacity is reached.

The book, coordinated by Barea, asserts that Rocío Jurado holds an unparalleled place in the history of Spanish culture, serving as the last link between traditional folk singers and the first of a new, revitalising lineage. It argues that the Chipiona-born performer became a pivotal figure bridging two interpretations of copla, flamenco, and music in general.

Carlos Barea remarked that Rocío Jurado was “a feminist, an ally of the LGTBIQ+ community, a victim of Francoist censorship, and at the same time, the wife of a bullfighter, a devoted mother, and a devotee of the Virgen de Regla. She embodies the tensions between tradition and modernity, rupture and continuity, both personally and professionally.”

Barea, born in Granada in 1987, holds a degree in Advertising and Public Relations from Rey Juan Carlos University, a master's in Creative Writing from Hotel Kafka, and a master's in LGTBIQ+ Studies from Complutense University of Madrid. He has contributed to various media outlets, including the Spanish Television programme Cine de Barrio, and has conducted workshops on diversity in the audiovisual world. For the publisher Dos Bigotes, he has coordinated collective works such as ‘Flores para Lola. Una mirada queer y feminista sobre La Faraona’, ‘Ocaña, el eterno brillo del Sol de Cantillana’, and ‘Eloy de la Iglesia. El placer oculto del cine español’. He is also a co-author of ‘Larga vida al trash! El cine de John Waters como nunca te lo habían contado’ and ‘Gloria. La poeta de los amores prohibidos’.

During tomorrow's event, Carlos Barea will engage in a dialogue with philologist Daniel Blesa, known as ‘Supremme de Luxe’ in his drag queen persona. Since 2021, Supremme de Luxe has gained significant media presence as the host of the television programme Drag Race España. In addition to a notable musical career, Supremme de Luxe is recognised for his polished image, live vocal performances, remarkable improvisational skills, and an incredible connection with the audience.
