A group of around 40 pilgrims recently participated in a stage of the Camiño do Mar, a pilgrimage route along the Galician coast, which is being promoted by the Friends of the Camiño do Mar Association and the Burela Fishermen's Producers Organisation (OPP).
Ramiro Fernández, the Councillor for Tourism in Burela, welcomed the pilgrims at the Vila do Medio church, where he explained the history of the temple and signed their pilgrimage credentials. The group had walked from the church of Fazouro to Vila do Medio as part of their journey.
This initiative not only promotes the Camiño do Mar but also highlights the fish species caught in the port of Burela. Following the activity, participants enjoyed a tasting of seafood sourced from the local fish market.
Fernández expressed gratitude for the efforts of the Friends of the Camiño do Mar Association in promoting this pilgrimage route. He noted that the Camiño do Mar is already recognised by the Church, allowing pilgrims to receive the Compostela certificate for completing a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. However, the route is still awaiting official recognition from the Xunta de Galicia, the regional government.
The Burela Council has stated its commitment to supporting this initiative and working towards achieving official recognition for the route, which Fernández believes would significantly boost tourism in the A Mariña region.
