On 1 October 2023, the pensioners' federations of CCOO (Comisiones Obreras) and UGT (Unión General de Trabajadores) in Cantabria will commemorate older persons' day with a rally outside the Delegation of the Government in Santander, starting at 12:00. During this event, they will outline their main demands and submit a manifesto focused on housing issues.
Under the slogan ‘For dignified ageing, with rights and autonomy’, both unions will advocate for the recognition of the social and economic contributions of older individuals, countering narratives that seek to create generational divides. They will call for sufficient and revalued public pensions, a quality public healthcare system, and effective policies to ensure equality while combating poverty and age discrimination.
Among their key demands is the right to dignified housing, along with the adaptation and accessibility of living environments, efforts to combat energy poverty, and a digitalisation process that does not replace in-person support in essential services. Additionally, UGT and CCOO will advocate for a specific legal framework to protect the rights of older persons, a comprehensive social pact for dignified ageing, and increased participation of older individuals in public policies that affect them.
