CCOO mobilises in Santander for better working conditions in the care sector

Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) in Cantabria is organising a demonstration on 14 October at 11.30 am in front of the Government Delegation in Santander. The event, themed ‘Caring has a price’, aims to advocate for the social, labour, and economic recognition of care work.

The union emphasises that care services are a fundamental pillar of the welfare state, and ensuring dignified and quality care requires acknowledging the value of those who provide these services, whether in homes or specialised centres. CCOO is calling for increased resources, improved services, and more professionals in the sector, alongside measures to eliminate the precarious working conditions that currently prevail.

Key demands of the mobilisation include ensuring public management of care services, increasing funding from relevant administrations, and establishing a minimum starting salary of €1,500 per month, with a target of €1,800 within three years. Additionally, CCOO is pushing for the eradication of part-time contracts, a reduction in temporary employment, and enhanced occupational health protections, addressing the demanding conditions faced by workers.

On the same day, CCOO's Health and Sociosanitary Sectors Federation will hold a dependency assembly regarding the negotiation of a new national agreement. This meeting will take place from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm at the union's headquarters in Santander (C/Santa Clara, 5). It will feature state representatives from the union involved in the negotiations, who will provide updates and answer questions from attendees.
