Claudine Pailhès and Carles Gascón present 'Les Cosenyores d’Andorra'

On 24 September 2026, the foyer of the Consell General hosted the presentation of the book Les Cosenyores d’Andorra, co-authored by Claudine Pailhès and Carles Gascón. The authors have conducted extensive research to highlight the contributions of three women who held the title of cosenyores, aiming to restore their place in Andorran history.

The title of cosenyor was held exclusively by three women, all from the French side, considering the episcopal status of the other cosenyor. This study delves into the lives and governance of Isabel de Foix-Castellbó, Caterina I de Navarra, and Joana d’Albret. The authors have also included Germana de Foix, who, although not a cosenyor, was a claimant to the title.

The selection of these figures was not arbitrary; the authors explained that they considered all women who inherited the title of cosenyoría in Andorra, specifically the title of the County of Foix. Due to the Salic law, there have been no French queens or, subsequently, any female presidents of the Republic.

Pailhès and Gascón concurred that their gender imposed certain limitations on their ability to act freely throughout their lives, yet it did not significantly affect their roles as cosenyores of Andorra.
