The Comunidad de Madrid is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the José Cubero Yiyo bullfighting school, located in the Venta del Batán within the Casa de Campo park. This institution serves as a training ground for approximately 140 young individuals aged between nine and 20, who are aspiring to become the next stars of bullfighting.
Students at the school receive instruction from experienced professionals, including the current director and bullfighter Fernando Robleño, as well as fellow bullfighter Sergio Aguilar. The curriculum includes practical classes focusing on the art of bullfighting, known as toreo de salón, alongside theoretical training twice a week. This theoretical component covers various topics such as breeding techniques, the evolution of bulls in the field, and the different styles of bullfighting.
In addition to their training, students work with a physical trainer who provides them with an exercise regimen to ensure they are physically prepared. During the autumn months, the school arranges field trips to visit various breeding farms across the region.
The José Cubero Yiyo school was established on 10 October 1976 by Enrique Martín Arranz. Over the years, it has produced notable bullfighters, including José Cubero Yiyo, after whom the school is named, as well as José Miguel Arroyo Joselito, Julián López El Juli, and Juan Carlos Collado El Niño de la Taurina, among others.
