The Triana district of Seville will see the writer Cristina Medina Muñoz and painter Rafael Torres take centre stage for the Semana Santa celebrations in 2027. The announcement was made by Manuel Alés, the district delegate for Triana, who expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming festivities.
Medina, a native of Seville born in 1980, has deep roots in Triana, a neighbourhood known for its rich cultural heritage and strong community ties. She has been actively involved in local traditions and religious festivities from a young age, particularly those associated with Semana Santa. Her experience includes roles within the Hermandad del Cachorro and the Hermandad del Rocío de Triana, where she has contributed to various activities, including directing a children's choir.
In addition to her cofrade (brotherhood) activities, Medina is a published author, having released her first novel, Despertar Cofrade, in 2022. She has also been involved in educational roles, currently working in a school focused on guidance and speech therapy.
Rafael Torres, the selected painter for the event, has developed a unique artistic style under the guidance of renowned Sevillian painter Nuria Barrera Bellido. His previous works include creating the poster for the Semana Santa of the Hermandad de Padre Pío in 2018 and various artistic projects for local brotherhoods. Torres is also known for his contributions to the traditional art of belenismo, the crafting of nativity scenes.
Alés highlighted the significance of both Medina and Torres in representing the traditions of Triana, stating that their selection reflects a commitment to celebrating the neighbourhood's rich history and culture. The preparations for the 2027 Semana Santa are already underway, with both figures poised to bring their unique perspectives to this cherished local event.
