Cultural funding of 200,000 euros to support sporting excellence and traditional activities

The Ministry of Culture, Linguistic Policy and Sport has announced the allocation of 200,000 euros in aid, as published in the Official Bulletin of the Principality of Asturias. This funding reflects the dual commitment of the Asturian Government to recognise elite athletes and support organisations that preserve traditional sports.

Of the total amount, 149,999.67 euros will be awarded through the Sports Excellence Awards, benefiting 39 athletes who have reached the absolute category of national high level or regional high performance. This financial support aims to acknowledge the dedication, perseverance, and commitment required to compete at the highest levels.

The funding will be distributed proportionally across categories and will be paid in a single instalment without the need for subsequent justification, beyond the verification of established eligibility criteria.

Support for traditional sports

Additionally, the Asturian Government is reinforcing its support for entities working to conserve and promote traditional sports. A separate allocation of 49,998.93 euros will be distributed among 14 clubs, associations, and federations organising competitions, initiation activities, and promotional initiatives.

Projects selected include various forms of bowling and traditional rowing, with initiatives such as the VI Children’s League of Celta Bowling, children’s bowling events, and the Championship of Bowling at the Muséu del Pueblu d’Asturies. There are also plans to reissue a manual for beginners in cuatreada bowling and to finance regattas to promote traditional Asturian rowing.

These initiatives aim to ensure the continuity of traditional practices and encourage children and young people to engage with them from an early age. The funding supports both established competitions and educational activities that introduce these disciplines to new audiences.

Increased investment in sports

This funding announcement is part of a progressive increase in regional investment in sports. The Asturian Government has already committed two million euros for sports federations, an additional 2.5 million euros for elite clubs, and 300,000 euros for aid directed at high-level and high-performance athletes for 2027, with the goal of consolidating the growth of the Asturian sports system.
