Domingo das Mozas celebrates galician tradition in Lugo with traditional dress and folk music

The Domingo das Mozas, a key event of the San Froilán festival, filled Lugo with Galician tradition and culture through a programme that celebrated traditional attire, folk music, and paid homage to Rosalía de Castro. Lugo's mayor, Elena Candia, led the traditional dress parade, accompanied by municipal councillors, featuring participants from various cultural associations showcasing representative garments from different Galician regions.

Candia emphasised the importance of cultural heritage, stating, “Our cultural heritage has immense richness and is part of our identity as Galicians, and we must pass this on to future generations.” She also expressed gratitude to the participating associations for sharing this wealth with the public and allowing them to enjoy the carefully crafted traditional outfits.

During the display, Teresa Astorgano, president of the Grupo Etnográfico Traxandaina, noted that “the Camiño Primitivo and other Jacobean routes have also left their mark on traditional Galician dress, as the passage of pilgrims brought new influences, fabrics, and embroidery that enriched the costumes, in a celebration of history, tradition, and culture that we continue to honour with pride.”

The parade included the Asociación del Camiño Primitivo de Baleira, Asociación Cultural Peleriños de Sarria, Airiños de Orbazai, Amigos do Camiño, and Grupo Etnográfico Traxandaina. The presence of these organisations linked the tradition of Galician dress with the Camiño, in a day dedicated to celebrating local roots and identity.

An exhibition of costumes took place in the Praza Maior, followed by a parade to the Rosalía de Castro park, where a traditional floral tribute was made to the writer by Sandra Piñeiro, president of the Provincial Court of Lugo.

Simultaneously, traditional music filled the streets and squares as the XXVIII Mostra de Música Tradicional Galega brought folk music to the historic centre throughout the day. Organised by the Asociación de Gaiteir@s Galeg@s, the event featured over ten groups aimed at promoting and celebrating Galician traditional music.

The street performances occurred from 11:30 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 18:00. In the morning, groups departed from the Mosqueira, touring various streets and squares within the walled city, concluding in the Praza Maior. The afternoon saw a return to street performances, leading into concerts at the Praza de Santa María.

Participating groups included Arume de Boiro, Axeigo, Lembranzas do Tambre, Lubicáns, Os Mersenarios, Os Mecos de Ogrobe, Pandereteiros de Cántigas e Frores, Turoqva, Xente Nova de Ferrol, and Zanfoneiros da Tradescola. The musical programme concluded in the Praza de Santa María with concerts by Bouba Pandeireteiras at 18:30 and Os Carunchos at 20:00.

The celebration of music and traditional dress once again took centre stage in one of the major events of San Froilán, highlighting the richness of Galician culture and the importance of keeping traditions alive for future generations.
