Teatro Español, part of the Madrid City Council's Department of Culture, Tourism, and Sports, is set to revive ‘Duermen bajo las aguas’, an adaptation of Carmen Kurtz's first novel, directed by Sara Mérida. The play will run from October 8 to 25 in the Salón de los Balcones, following its successful inclusion in last season's programming.
The narrative follows the life of Pilar, a young woman from Barcelona in the early 20th century, whose life is disrupted by war. As she navigates love, loss, and the challenges of displacement, Pilar is compelled to confront new beginnings in exile. Throughout her journey, she discovers a strength that leads her to question traditional gender roles and seek her own identity.
Director Sara Mérida focuses not on reconstructing the historical context or placing the war at the forefront but rather on Pilar's personal decisions and her quest for self-discovery as a woman, mother, daughter, and friend, ultimately taking control of her own destiny.
The role of Pilar is portrayed by Rebeca Hernando and Ainara Orgaz, who depict her at different stages of life. One actress represents Pilar in the present, while the other provides insight through the lens of time, illustrating how experiences and choices shape her self-perception.
The production features set design by Anna Domingo Enrich, lighting by Samuel Mérida, costumes by Alba Roselló, and sound design by Violeta Marazuela. ‘Duermen bajo las aguas’ is produced by La Petite Mort.
