The Fiesta de les cebolles rellenes is a celebration honouring one of the most emblematic dishes of local cuisine. Held in San Martín del Rey Aurelio, this event attracts numerous visitors eager to experience the rich culinary tradition of the municipality. Since its inception in 1972, the festival has grown in popularity, becoming a hallmark of Asturian culture.
The origins of the fiesta trace back to 1927, when Aniceta Fueyo, known as La Nina, found herself in a peculiar situation on Good Friday. With only onions and cans of tuna at her disposal, she decided to innovate by stuffing the onions, creating a dish that has since become a symbol of the community.
Every 30 November, the aroma of stuffed onions fills El Entrego, where families and friends gather to enjoy local delicacies, including callos (tripe), casadiellas (sweet pastries), arroz con leche (rice pudding), and frisuelos (pancakes).
