Fuenlabrada celebrates library day with activities for all ages

The libraries in Fuenlabrada are set to host a variety of activities for both children and adults as part of the celebrations for Library Day, which takes place on 24 October. The local council has developed a comprehensive programme aimed at promoting reading, catering to different age groups.

Throughout October and extending into late November, with some activities continuing until June, the seven municipal libraries will offer a range of events. Highlights include the chance to become a librarian for a day, blind book loans, book presentations, storytelling sessions, and dedicated book exchanges among readers.

“Our goal is to commemorate this important day and to continue our daily efforts in promoting reading, which has always been a hallmark of Fuenlabrada,” said Cristina Mora, the Councillor for Culture.

The 'Librarians for a Day' initiative is aimed at children, allowing them to engage in simple library tasks under professional supervision, such as lending books. The 'Blind Book Loans' initiative invites readers of all ages (from 0 to over 100) to borrow wrapped books without knowing their titles or authors, offering a surprise selection of quality literature.

Another activity, exclusive to adults, is the 'Book Exchange with Dedications', where participants can choose a book from the adult section and leave another book with a personal dedication for someone else.

Additionally, there will be storytelling sessions for children aged five and older, as well as a book presentation by Manuel Espejo Jurado, who will introduce his work 'Entre olivares sagrados'.

This initiative is part of the annual observance of Library Day, established in 1997 by the Spanish Association of Friends of Children's and Youth Books, in memory of the destruction of the Sarajevo library during the Balkan War in 1992.
