Igualada marks international day of older persons with manifesto reading

On 1 October, at 12:00, the Plenary Hall of Igualada Town Hall welcomed the reading of the manifesto for the International Day of Older Persons, an event held each year to highlight the importance of older individuals in society.

The manifesto emphasises the need to build a society that respects, values, and includes older people, rejecting any form of age discrimination. It denounces ageism as a deeply rooted yet silent form of discrimination, based on prejudices and oversimplifications that overlook the diverse experiences and ways of ageing.

Particular attention is drawn to the fact that older women often experience this discrimination more acutely. The text also advocates for the dismissal of any confrontations between generations, promoting a future built on dialogue, respect, and collaboration between the young and the elderly.

The event commenced with a speech by Sandra de la Iglesia, the Councillor for Social Action, who highlighted the “potential of older people and the necessity of including them in all daily aspects of society, as they are a source of knowledge, wisdom, and invaluable contributions.”

To conclude the event, the “Cors Units” choir from the Casal del Passeig performed a short concert, adding a festive tone to the day.
