The city council of Lleida has initiated recovery works at the Camp Annex of the Camp d'Esports, a project designed to restore this facility for sporting activities and make it available for local clubs. The current tasks involve clearing existing vegetation and removing accumulated debris from the ground, preparing it for the subsequent sowing of new grass.
The Urban Services of the Paeria, Lleida's city council, are carrying out these works as part of a broader plan to rehabilitate this municipal facility, which is currently in a condition that hinders sports practice. It is anticipated that, following the cleaning and conditioning efforts, sowing of the grass will commence in approximately fifteen days by a specialised company.
In parallel, the irrigation system at Camp Annex is also being reviewed and adjusted. This includes checking the functionality of the irrigation network and the pumping system to promote the growth of the new grass while ensuring proper maintenance in the future.
Jackson Quiñónez, the councillor for sports, emphasised that this initiative "is an important step towards recovering a municipal sports space that had ceased to be functional and returning it to the city." He added, "The goal is for Camp Annex to become a useful facility for clubs and to complement the activities at the Camp d'Esports under the best conditions."
The recovery of this pitch also responds to the need for a dedicated training space. This will help reduce the wear on the grass at Camp d'Esports, allowing it to be maintained in better condition for matches. In this regard, the Paeria is collaborating with Atlètic Lleida and Lleida CF to formalise agreements that will regulate the use of municipal facilities. Both clubs, which also share the use of Camp d'Esports, will be able to utilise Camp Annex for their regular training sessions. Currently, these teams train at the municipal fields of Ramon Farrús and Gardeny, respectively.
According to the planned schedule, the pitch is expected to be operational by early next year. Quiñónez explained that the recovery of Camp Annex is part of a new phase of municipal management of Camp d'Esports. With the Paeria overseeing the facility, efforts have been made to ensure that sports activities can be balanced with better maintenance of the main playing field's grass, prioritising it for match play.
