Logroño's mayor, Conrado Escobar, along with Carlos Ruiz, the commercial delegate of Loterías y Apuestas del Estado in La Rioja, and Rosa Fernández, the councillor for Culture, presented a special National Lottery ticket today for the draw on 24 October. This ticket is dedicated to the Year of Rafael Azcona, a prominent Spanish screenwriter.
The ticket features a caricature of Azcona, inspired by the poster of Luis García Berlanga's film El verdugo, and includes the inscription: “Logroño as the Azcona city in the centenary of his birth.”
“Culture is a fundamental part of society, and this ticket represents the commitment of Loterías to promote and highlight the work of various institutions and artists. In this case, it celebrates the centenary of Rafael Azcona's birth, one of our most prestigious film authors, who made us reflect on various issues within Spanish society through his works,”
stated Ruiz, the provincial delegate of Loterías.
Escobar added, “The City Council of Logroño, as a tribute to the physical space where Rafael Azcona grew up, coinciding with the centenary of his birth, aims to reclaim the impact that the city had on one of the great screenwriters of Spanish cinema.”
Rafael Azcona is renowned for his significant works, including El pisito, El verdugo, and Plácido. He holds the record for the most Goya Awards in history, with six accolades.
“The council has declared 2026 as the Year of Rafael Azcona and has organised a wide and varied programme of activities across cultural, educational, tourism, and social sectors to remember his figure and promote his work and legacy, especially among the younger generations of Logroñeses,”
Escobar noted.
For the lottery draw on 24 October, 10 million tickets will be available across the Loterías commercial network, providing significant exposure for the Year of Rafael Azcona. This National Lottery draw will distribute a total of €42 million in prizes, including a top prize of €600,000 per series and a second prize of €120,000 per series.
