The Ayuntamiento de Madrid has awarded the 2026 Francisco de Quevedo Poetry Prize to writer Abraham Gragera for his collection La domesticación, published in 2025 by Pre-Textos. This accolade, which comes with a €10,000 prize, acknowledges the quality and excellence of a poetry book written in Spanish by an author from Madrid or closely linked to the city.
Marta Rivera de la Cruz, the city’s delegate for Culture, Tourism and Sport, emphasised the significance of this recognition for promoting contemporary poetry. She stated that it allows us to explore the human experience and discover new ways to articulate what concerns, moves, or transforms us. Rivera de la Cruz remarked, “With the Francisco de Quevedo Prize, Madrid acknowledges the talent of our poets and the ability of literature to enrich our cultural life.”
La domesticación is part of a literary career that has established Gragera as one of the prominent voices in contemporary Spanish poetry. Born in Madrid in 1973 and also connected to Montijo in Badajoz, Gragera has published several notable works, including Adiós a la época de los grandes caracteres (2005), El tiempo menos solo (2012), and O Futuro (2017). The latter earned him the Best Book of the Year award from the Madrid Booksellers Guild and the Madrid Critics' Prize.
The Francisco de Quevedo Poetry Prize was established in 1973, discontinued in 2011, and revived by the Ayuntamiento de Madrid in 2021 to promote poetic creation in the city. Since its revival, the award has honoured various authors, reinforcing the commitment to poetry as an essential part of the literary heritage in Spanish.
