Madrid City Council Allocates €750,000 to Caritas for Housing Support Program

On October 1, 2026, the Madrid City Council approved a nominative grant of €750,000 to Caritas Diocesana de Madrid to co-finance its program aimed at supporting families experiencing residential exclusion in the city.

According to Inma Sanz, the Deputy Mayor and municipal spokesperson, the City Council continues its support for this initiative, which provides temporary accommodation and social support to vulnerable families. The goal is to help these families overcome their circumstances, regain their autonomy, and access independent housing to develop their life projects.

The program targets families without homes, those living in substandard housing, or those in overcrowded situations. Priority is given to both single-parent and nuclear families with children who are in a sustained state of residential exclusion.

Program Details

The Caritas program offers 187 accommodation places, of which the City Council finances 59. Specifically, 45 places are designated for medium- and long-term stays, while 14 are reserved for emergency housing.

Caritas Diocesana is responsible for the program's management and methodology. The initiative aims to help families achieve autonomous life projects by providing psychological support, legal advice, and social assistance across various areas, including family, employment, economic issues, housing, health, personal development, and relationships.

The program combines individual interventions, involving regular follow-ups and support for families, with group interventions aimed at adults, which include workshops on positive parenting and new technologies, family meeting spaces, and community gatherings. Additionally, it seeks to prevent social exclusion risks for children through socio-educational activities, such as social skills workshops, academic reinforcement, camps, and leisure activities.

Impact in 2025

In 2025, the City Council's support for this initiative was similar, and the approved grant will cover expenses incurred under the project throughout 2026. The program assisted a total of 259 users in 2025. Specifically, it provided high-intensity social support accommodation to 196 individuals (82 adults and 112 children) from 52 different family units. Furthermore, 18 different families, comprising 63 individuals (34 adults and 29 children), were assisted in emergency housing accommodations.
