The Madrid City Council, through its Works and Equipment Department, will commence upgrades to the pedestrian bridge leading to La Lira Bridge starting this Monday, October 5. This infrastructure spans the access road to the M-30 heading north from Moratalaz and the A-3 motorway, connecting the districts of Moratalaz and Retiro.
The upgrades, which are expected to last until mid-November, represent an investment of €224,000. The initiative aims to enhance safety, accessibility, and maintenance of the bridge through a comprehensive intervention on its key structural elements.
The work will primarily involve renewing the existing pavement with a new surface protection system, replacing the current railing with one that meets current accessibility standards, and replacing expansion joints as well as repairing the abutments.
Phased Execution to Minimize Disruption
To maintain pedestrian connectivity between Moratalaz and Retiro throughout the project, the works will be carried out in five consecutive phases, with only one section of the bridge being worked on at a time. This approach will allow for the ongoing use of the infrastructure while ensuring a minimum clear pedestrian pathway of 1.20 meters, which will be properly marked and protected.
Bicycle users will also be able to use this pathway, although they will be required to walk their bikes in areas where indicated by appropriate signage.
This project is part of the ongoing efforts by the Works and Equipment Department to maintain and improve municipal structures, ensuring safety, accessibility, and proper upkeep of the city's infrastructure.
