Madrid Launches 'Hábitat Madrid' Program Featuring Over 400 Environmental Activities

On October 5, 2026, Madrid's Urban Planning, Environment, and Mobility Department announced the launch of the 'Hábitat Madrid' program, which includes over 400 activities aimed at promoting the city's environmental and natural heritage.

The agenda features activities suitable for all ages, requiring prior reservation. Highlights include guided tours of parks, nurseries, gardens, wildlife centers, and cycling routes, alongside workshops, exhibitions, webinars, and environmental days.

World Bird Day and Trashumancia Festival

In celebration of World Bird Day, the program has organized visits to various parks to observe the city's rich birdlife. Additionally, the Trashumancia Festival will showcase exhibitions, workshops, and the popular family walk with a flock of sheep.

The Environmental Education Center at El Retiro will host its traditional giant pumpkin contest, which has gained popularity in recent years. Visitors can also learn about recycling and waste management at the Migas Calientes and Valdemingómez centers.

Key Events and Activities

  • World Bird Day activities include workshops on birdwatching and exotic birds at the Cabaña del Retiro.
  • The Trashumancia Festival will feature activities such as wool spinning demonstrations, storytelling, and the family event 'Pastores por un día' on October 25, culminating in a traditional procession through central Madrid.
  • The El Retiro Environmental Education Center will celebrate its Pumpkin Festival on October 17, showcasing local products and promoting responsible consumption.

Environmental Education Centers and Activities

The CEA Dehesa de la Villa has planned guided tours and workshops on various themes, including recycling paper and natural cosmetics. The agenda also includes a quarterly exhibition on bats and a basic bicycle mechanics workshop.

The 'Mercadea' program will conclude its textile waste reduction initiatives at local universities, while the autumn agenda includes visits to the Migas Calientes Composting Plant and the Valdemingómez Technology Park.

Exploring Madrid's Heritage

The 'Madrid Otra Mirada' program offers a unique perspective on the city's environmental and cultural heritage, with visits to historical parks and gardens. New this year is a georoute exploring the stones and minerals used in the city's construction.

Other environmental education centers will offer guided tours and workshops, including origami, recycled planters, and various activities at the Juan Carlos I Park.
