Madrid Names 26 New Streets in Los Cerros, Vicálvaro

On October 1, 2026, the Madrid City Council approved the naming of 26 new streets in the urban development of Los Cerros, located in the Vicálvaro district. This initiative combines the recognition of significant cultural and historical figures with the revival of traditional place names associated with the area.

According to Inma Sanz, the Deputy Mayor and municipal spokesperson, the proposal includes names suggested by local historians and aims to honor individuals from various fields who have contributed to the knowledge, culture, and transformation of Madrid.

Among the notable names included is Alfredo Di Stéfano, a legendary figure in football history and closely associated with Real Madrid, where he played for 11 seasons and won multiple titles, including five consecutive European Cups. Di Stéfano remained connected to the club until his passing in 2014.

Another street will be named after Victoria de los Ángeles, a renowned Spanish soprano of the 20th century, celebrated for her performances in prestigious opera houses worldwide, including the Paris Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She received numerous accolades, such as the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts.

The new street names will also commemorate Luisa Ignacia Roldán, known as ‘La Roldana’, the first documented female sculptor in Spain and a prominent figure in Baroque sculpture. She was appointed court sculptor for King Charles II in 1692.

Additionally, the name of José Rodríguez Losada, a famous 19th-century clockmaker known for the clock at the Real Casa de Correos in Puerta del Sol, will also be featured. His donation of the clock in 1866 made it an iconic symbol of the city.

The proposal also recognizes a diverse group of historians and researchers dedicated to studying and promoting Madrid's heritage. This includes Francisco José Portela Sandoval, an art historian, and José del Corral Raya, known for his works on Madrid's traditions and daily life.

Furthermore, the new street names will celebrate contributions from the fields of music, dance, and the performing arts, with names such as Ataúlfo Argenta, a conductor, and Mariemma, a celebrated dancer and choreographer.

In addition to honoring these personalities, the new street names will restore seven historical toponyms from Los Cerros: El Raso, Los Baldíos, El Concordado, Chortal de la Higuera, Tierra de la Lámpara, Casa Montero, and Fuente Amarguilla. These names, proposed by the Historical-Cultural Association Vicus Albus, are linked to the agricultural and pastoral history of the Vicálvaro area.

This initiative aims to integrate the memory of individuals associated with culture, science, and the arts with the historical identity of the territory, ensuring that the growth of this new area in Vicálvaro maintains a connection to its past.
