The October issue of eme21mag, the cultural magazine published by the Madrid City Council's Department of Culture, Tourism and Sport, focuses on the city's rich heritage. This month features significant events including Madrid Otra Mirada (MOM), the Fiesta de la Trashumancia, and the International Architecture Week.
On 25 October, thousands of merino sheep will parade through the streets of central Madrid, a unique spectacle that is captured on the magazine's cover, illustrated by Santipérez. The scene depicts the flock on Calle Mayor, as locals and passers-by watch in delight.
The opening article, penned by writer Mercedes Cebrián, delves into the Fiesta de la Trashumancia, a traditional livestock event recognised as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 1994. The magazine also features illustrations related to two other cultural highlights taking place this month: the free cultural programme Madrid Otra Mirada and the International Architecture Week.
Architect Raúl Torres shares his top five architectural favourites in Madrid, while Raúl Arias explains the workings of the storm tanks located beneath the city. Additionally, Sr. García reflects on the life of César Cort Botí, a pioneering architect in Spanish urbanism, who designed the Quinta de los Molinos, which celebrates its centenary this year.
In a different architectural vein, Carlos Rodríguez Casado presents the altars of the dead, which will be open to the public this month in various locations including CentroCentro, Invernadero de Arganzuela, the Montaña de los Gatos in Retiro Park, Teatro Fernán Gómez, Centro Cultural de la Villa, and Casa de México, in honour of the Día de Muertos.
Furthermore, Nacho Sevilla explores the artistic and heritage value of El Pardo mountain.
As always, eme21mag dedicates space to the arts. This month's featured interview is with Jesús Cisneros, an artist, illustrator, educator, and the 2026 National Illustration Award winner, who also designed the Christmas show poster for Teatro Circo Price. The article is written by Ignacio Vleming, with a portrait by Jorge Arévalo.
In design and art, an exhibition dedicated to the late designer Cruz Novillo opened at CentroCentro on 8 October. Nearby, Mar Ferrero brings to life the characters associated with the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. Crossing the river, Cinta Arribas offers a cultural journey from Usera to Neptuno, while Juan Berrio proposes an engaging activity in one of Madrid's most charming squares.
The magazine concludes with a 'move' observed by gardener and landscape designer Eduardo Barba, highlighting the change of colours in the leaves of the city's trees and parks during this season, illustrated by Javier Zabala.
The digital version of eme21mag is available on the Madrid Destino website, while printed copies can be obtained for free at libraries, municipal markets, cultural centres, the Tourism Centre at Casa de la Panadería, and tourist information points.
