Madrid's festive lights to adorn over 250 locations across 21 districts

The city of Madrid will feature 7,458 light strings, 131 cherry trees, and 14 large illuminated fir trees, alongside various other festive decorations. All lighting will consist of over 14 million high-efficiency LED bulbs. For the third consecutive year, the display will include lights designed by primary school children who participated in a drawing competition organised by the city council.

The Madrid City Council has approved a €5.9 million contract for the installation, maintenance, and dismantling of Christmas lighting elements, which will be switched on at the end of November and remain until the Feast of the Epiphany on 6 January. The total investment in this year's festive lighting is expected to reach approximately €7.3 million.

The lighting will be installed at more than 250 locations across all 21 districts and will feature numerous innovations while maintaining a commitment to environmental sustainability through the use of the latest efficient technologies. All lighting will be LED, prioritising energy savings and reducing light pollution in the new designs. Additionally, as in previous years, the energy consumption costs will be covered by the awarded contractor.

This year, the festive lighting will again include designs from children in first and second grade who submitted their artwork to the city council's school drawing competition, with winning proposals being transformed into Christmas lights. Furthermore, as in past years, contributions from renowned designers and specialists will be included, with new additions made possible through a partnership between the city council and the Association of Fashion Creators of Spain (ACME).

In total, the streets of the capital will be decorated with 131 cherry trees and 7,458 light strings, which together measure 164 kilometres—equivalent to a round trip from Madrid to Segovia. This will be complemented by 14 large illuminated fir trees and other traditional Christmas motifs.

During the 2025-2026 Christmas campaign, from the lighting switch-on until the Day of Kings, an estimated return of €4.1 billion was generated in the city, with an average daily expenditure of €89.3 million, according to a report by the General Directorate of Economics of the Madrid City Council.
