The Museu d’Art Modern de la Diputació de Tarragona (MAMT) is hosting the exhibition 'Photobooks. The paradise as a destination?' until 10 January 2027. Curated by Enric Montes, the exhibition is part of the SCAN Tarragona International Photography Festival, which is currently in its 13th edition.
This exhibition highlights the photobook as a vital tool for the creation, reflection, and dissemination of contemporary photography. The opening event took place on Saturday and featured Óscar Sánchez, the deputy for Social and Cultural Promotion of the Diputació de Tarragona.
The theme for this year's SCAN is 'Metamorphosis', inviting reflections on the transformative processes experienced by individuals, societies, and the contemporary environment through photography. The publications showcased in 'Photobooks. The paradise as a destination?' explore the concept of metamorphosis broadly, addressing physical, social, technological, emotional, climatic, and cultural transformations. These changes affect bodies, territories, relationships, communication habits, and perspectives.
The photobook format is particularly relevant for engaging with these themes. In an era dominated by the rapid flow of digital images, it offers a different experience of time and observation, encouraging viewers to pause and establish connections between images, texts, and silences. Unlike immediate consumption, it demands a certain slowness, allowing for a sustained and reflective gaze.
The SCAN festival runs from 16 October to 29 November 2026, featuring a combination of exhibitions, professional activities, outreach, and community participation. The MAMT is a key partner of the festival. In addition to 'Photobooks. The paradise as a destination?', the MAMT is also presenting the exhibition 'Colección FORVM. Shaking history, transforming photography', which aligns closely with the transformative theme inspiring SCAN 2026. This year's SCAN coincides with the 50th anniversary of the MAMT, established in 1976.
