The council of Marbella has completed the expansion of the sports facilities at the Carlos Cabezas Pavilion, located in the Bello Horizonte area, with the opening of a new indoor basketball court. This addition increases the capacity of the facility and provides improved conditions for year-round sports practice.

The project required a municipal investment of €700,000 and took approximately six months to execute. Mayor Ángeles Muñoz highlighted that the expansion responds to the growing demand from local clubs engaged in basketball. She visited the new facilities alongside Sports Councillor Lisandro Vieytes, former professional player Carlos Cabezas, and representatives from Marbella Basket and Baloncesto Marbella, Andrés Jiménez and Pedro Pérez, respectively.

Muñoz explained that the project transformed the old outdoor courts by adding a large roof and making necessary upgrades to the lighting and overall space. As a result, the complex now features three courts, including the main one, significantly expanding training and competition opportunities for local clubs and athletes.

The mayor also noted that this improvement is part of the municipal plan to enhance sports offerings and meet the needs of local clubs. “We aimed to ensure that the Carlos Cabezas Pavilion would have this new court, and now it is operational and being used by children,” she stated.

Regarding the development of the works, Muñoz mentioned that the duration exceeded initial estimates due to the complexity of the project and structural requirements for the roof installation. Former international player Carlos Cabezas expressed his pride in the new facility bearing his name, emphasising that it will serve the children of Marbella. He commended the council's efforts to enhance sports facilities in the area, stating that the investment reflects a commitment to providing excellent resources for local youth.

Pedro Pérez, the sports director of Club Baloncesto Marbella, highlighted the necessity of expanding the facilities to accommodate the growth of training teams, noting that the youth club has nearly 400 players. He explained that the previous facilities were insufficient, particularly for the younger categories who only had access to outdoor courts.

Andrés Jiménez, acting director of CD Marbella Basket, underscored the importance of any new sports facility for the municipality, especially one associated with a widely popular sport like basketball. He indicated that with the new season underway, Marbella Basket will have around 300-350 athletes, underscoring the need for more spaces to support the development and growth of grassroots basketball in Marbella.
