Marcos Cao to perform 'Cantar la ciudad' at MAS in Santander

The Museo de Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo de Santander y Cantabria (MAS) will host a new session of the 'Intersecciones Creativas. Relatos compartidos - Memoria viva del MAS' cycle on 13 October at 18:30. This event will feature local musician, singer, and songwriter Marcos Cao.

Titled 'Cantar la ciudad. La ciudad como relato compartido', the concert will create a dialogue between music and selected works from the MAS collection that relate to urban identity and everyday life. Entry is free until full capacity is reached.

Noemí Méndez, the city’s Councillor for Culture, emphasised that this initiative offers a unique way to engage with the MAS collection, linking artworks to personal experiences, memories, and emotions tied to life in the city. The session will explore the concept of the city not merely as a physical space, but as a tapestry of voices, journeys, routines, encounters, and affections.

During the concert, Cao will perform a selection of songs related to the chosen artworks and will share reflections on the city as a space of both personal and collective memory. Audience participation will also be encouraged, with attendees invited to contribute a word about contemporary Santander—be it a place, feeling, memory, or desire. These contributions will help create a collective portrait of the city.

The words and voices shared by the audience may serve as inspiration or be incorporated into the final soundscape created as part of the cycle.

Born in Santander in 1977, Marcos Cao is a musician, singer, and songwriter. He moved to Madrid in the early 2000s, where he founded the band La Sonrisa de Julia, gaining recognition in the independent pop-rock scene. In 2016, he launched his solo career with 'Océano Caos', and in 2022, he released 'Mañana mejor', produced by Carlos Ares. His repertoire blends traditional singer-songwriter elements with pop, placing a strong emphasis on lyrics. In 2026, La Sonrisa de Julia also returned with the album 'Enemigo'.

'Intersecciones Creativas' is an annual cultural mediation cycle designed to present the MAS collection from a contemporary and participatory perspective. Each session connects various forms of expression—sound, word, body, image, or archive—starting from a specific artwork or thematic axis of the collection. The cycle is organised by Redera Estudio Creativo, which oversees artistic direction, executive production, and the creation of the final soundscape.
