Mijas mayor Ana Mata has conducted a technical visit to the expansion works at Las Lagunas sports city, a significant project now seeking completion after seven years of development. The budget for this initiative is set at €4.8 million.

In March, the public tender for the completion of this facility, which is adjacent to the current sports centre, was awarded to the company Servimar 2008, with a projected execution period of ten months. Following preliminary works, construction commenced in May, marking a step forward in finalising a project that has faced numerous challenges since its inception seven years ago, including multiple periods of inactivity.

During her visit, the mayor was accompanied by Infrastructure Councillor Juan José Torres and Sports Councillor María Francisca Alarcón, as they reviewed the progress of the works. Currently, the focus is on installing electrical systems, plumbing, and internal partitions. Necessary tests have also been conducted to complete the building's facades.

Project features

The mayor highlighted that the project includes the completion of a multi-purpose building (for sports and administrative use), the construction of a therapeutic swimming pool in a separate but adjacent area, as well as access points, facilities, changing rooms, and a central plaza for distribution.

The main entrance will be located on the central Camino del Albero and will feature a front door that serves as a distribution area for users accessing various buildings and points of interest. Internal communication is designed to include open staircases and an elevator. The multi-purpose building will also have a protected staircase to ensure safe evacuation routes.

The basement will encompass the entire multi-purpose building, the central plaza, and part of the swimming pool facility. There will be vehicular access to a parking area, which will include 23 spaces, three of which will be accessible for individuals with reduced mobility. This level will also house a large area for auxiliary facilities.

The ground floor will feature the main access lobbies, changing rooms, and administrative offices. To facilitate the movement of people and prevent unnecessary congestion, a connecting door from the football field's fencing is planned, allowing direct access to the changing rooms without passing through the central plaza.

The therapeutic swimming pool will be directly connected to the plaza and will include a ground floor, accessible toilets, and changing rooms. Its design will feature beams resembling wood and a large window to enhance natural light.

All external landscaping, as well as connections to existing buildings and public roads, will be constructed with wide pathways that comply with mandatory accessibility regulations.

Las Lagunas sports city, named after Olympic snowboard medallist Regino Hernández, was built in 1991 and includes a football field, a multi-sport building with a gym, a heated swimming pool, grandstands, and outdoor courts. It is worth noting that the local government has initiated a project to renew the entire roof of the swimming pool area to prevent water leaks and falling debris. A formal awarding of this project is expected soon.
