Molina de Segura's meteorito film festival celebrates fifth edition from 26 to 31 October

The meteorito film festival in Molina de Segura is set to celebrate its fifth edition from 26 to 31 October 2026, showcasing a diverse programme of activities aimed at promoting cinema in the region.

The festival's agenda was unveiled during a press conference by María Hernández, the local councillor for culture. It will kick off on 26 October with the 'Reto 72h de Calles de Cine', an express short film competition where participants will have three days to write, shoot, and edit their films based on specific guidelines.

On 29 October at 18:00, the festival will introduce the Molina de Segura Film School (ESCIMOSE), followed by a screening of the short film 'Bandera Blanca', produced by the school's students and featuring actors Javier Mula and Amine Malah. The evening will continue with screenings of the short films created for the 'Reto 72h'.

The morning of 30 October will be dedicated to students from the third and fourth years of secondary education and those in the baccalaureate programme, who are invited to participate in a school film workshop. This workshop will cover various aspects of filmmaking, including production, shooting, editing, and screening of short films. The day will conclude with a screening of the official section's short films at 18:00.

On 31 October, attendees can look forward to two masterclasses: one by José Prats, focusing on the differences between directing a stop-motion 2D project, animation, and live action, and another by Eva Libertad, discussing the creative process behind her film 'Sorda'. The day will also feature a concert titled 'Bandas Sonoras de Cine' performed by the Hims Mola String Orchestra at 18:00, conducted by Raúl Céspedes. The closing gala and award ceremony for the 'Calles de Cine' competition and the official section will commence at 19:30.

The meteorito film festival is an initiative by the Molina de Segura City Council's culture department, aimed at establishing a year-round programme of cinematic activities. All events are free to attend, subject to capacity, and screenings will be presented in their original version with Spanish subtitles. Additionally, live sign language interpretation will be provided to ensure inclusivity.

The festival's official venue is the MUDEM (Museum of the Enclave of the Wall) in Molina de Segura, which also houses a permanent exhibition about the meteorite that fell in the area in 1858.

Recently, the selection committee for the meteorito festival announced the short films that will be featured in the official competition on 30 October. After reviewing nearly 600 submissions from across the country, the committee selected six films that stood out for their social relevance, quality, and originality. The selected films are 'El Cuerpo de Cristo', directed by Bea Lema; 'La Habitación de Eva', by Daniela Rey; 'Gallina', by Fernando Reinaldos; 'Loquita por ti', directed by Greta Díaz Moreau; 'Antitermitas', by Álex Rey; and 'Tenéis que verlo', by Nacho Solana.

The screening event will be held at the Virginia Martínez Fernández Auditorium in the MUDEM, divided into two segments, followed by discussions with the directors and screenwriters of the showcased short films.

According to María Hernández, “reaching this fifth edition with nearly 600 submissions demonstrates that El Meteorito is growing and that Molina de Segura is carving out its own space within the short film landscape. We want this festival to be a window for talent and a meeting point between filmmakers and the public. The culture department is committed to an open, free, and inclusive festival that not only screens films but also generates experiences, training, and opportunities to bring the seventh art closer to all audiences.”
