Ca l’Arenas, the art centre of the Museu de Mataró, will open its doors to the public on 23 October at 19:00 for the exhibition 'Mònica Vilert. Laberint'. This showcase offers a journey through the creative universe of the Mataró-born artist, featuring a selection of recent works alongside pieces from various stages of her career.
This marks the first time Vilert presents her work in a solo exhibition at the Museu de Mataró, although she has previously participated in various group shows. The exhibition includes paintings and small-scale sculptures that interact with one another, revealing an artistic practice characterised by constant experimentation with materials, textures, and the expressive possibilities of painting.
Materials such as plaster, wax, felt, fibreglass, and marble dust are combined with pigments and graphite to create surfaces and volumes that explore the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Vilert's work is noted for its restrained colour palette, particularly the emphasis on whites and greys, as well as a pursuit of light, contrasts, and the tactile qualities of materials. This experimentation results in abstract compositions where matter and texture play a central role.
Under the title 'Laberint', the artist invites reflection on the creative process and its parallels with life. Paths, crossroads, doubts, and decisions become a metaphor for artistic creation, understood as an exploratory process filled with uncertainties, contradictions, and discoveries.
a career linked to contemporary creation
Mònica Vilert (born 1966 in Mataró) holds a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona and boasts an artistic career spanning nearly four decades. Since the late 1980s, she has participated in both solo and group exhibitions, with work characterised by her investigation into matter, colour, and abstract language.
Throughout her career, she has exhibited in venues such as the Can Palauet exhibition halls in Mataró, Nau Gaudí, Destil·leria, Galería Pèrgamon in Barcelona, and the Centre d’Art Tecla Sala in Hospitalet de Llobregat, among others. Over the years, she has also maintained an international presence, particularly in Italy, where she is currently participating in the 'Pathos' exhibition as part of Rome Art Week.
In 2019, she won the VIII Biennial Painting Prize Torres García – City of Mataró for her untitled work, a recognition of her artistic quality and trajectory. The awarded piece is now part of the city's artistic heritage. Vilert has also engaged with the cultural life of Mataró, designing the poster for Les Santes in 2009.
a new exhibition in the 'singulares' cycle
'Mònica Vilert. Laberint' is part of the 'Singulares' project at the Museu de Mataró, an initiative launched in 2015 aimed at promoting local artists of recognised stature and enhancing the visibility of their work. The project includes an exhibition at Ca l’Arenas, the publication of a catalogue, and an educational programme that allows audiences to delve deeper into the artist's work and engage with contemporary creation through complementary activities.
The exhibition will be open from 23 October 2026 to 25 April 2027 at Ca l’Arenas (Calle de Argentona, 64).
