Municipal Markets in Madrid Celebrate Día de la Hispanidad with Cultural and Culinary Events

On October 12, various municipal markets in Madrid, including Barceló, La Cebada, Antón Martín, and San Isidro, will host a range of events celebrating Día de la Hispanidad. The initiative aims to highlight the cultural and culinary ties between Spain and Latin America.

Engracia Hidalgo, the delegate for Economy, Innovation, and Finance, presented the program at Mercado Barceló, emphasizing the importance of gastronomy as a reflection of identity and memory. She noted that the culinary connections between Spain and Latin America showcase a rich heritage that will be celebrated during this event.

“Gastronomy is identity and memory,” Hidalgo stated, underscoring its role in preserving cultural roots and illustrating the historical links forged across the Atlantic.

Festive Activities Across Municipal Markets

The celebrations will not be limited to Mercado Barceló; other markets will also participate in bringing Hispanic traditions to the capital's residents. For example:

  • Mercado de La Cebada: Live mariachi performances and traditional tastings will take place on October 8, 9, and 10.
  • Mercado de Antón Martín: From October 5 to 10, visitors can enjoy Latin DJ sessions, dance exhibitions, and themed decorations.
  • Mercado de San Isidro: A family-friendly theatrical performance titled “Los reporteros del Nuevo Mundo” will be held on October 10 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
  • Mercado de Las Águilas: A tasting of Spanish products is scheduled for October 9 at 11:00 AM.
  • Mercado de Villaverde Alto: A tasting of tortilla de patatas will be available on October 10 from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
  • Mercado de Las Ventas: A showcase of Hispanic American products will occur on October 9.
  • Mercado de La Paz: A joint event with the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) will take place on the afternoon of October 6, followed by tastings of Argentine, Venezuelan, and Chilean wines on October 9.

Promoting Local Commerce

The festivities are part of a broader municipal strategy to support and modernize local markets, reinforcing their role as vital hubs for community commerce. Hidalgo highlighted that the municipal government has already allocated €54 million of the €95 million budgeted for the 2025-2027 period to enhance commercial and hospitality activities in Madrid, with over €13 million dedicated to the modernization of municipal markets this year.

On October 12, the municipal markets and the Confederation of Commerce of Madrid (COCAM) will collaborate on a promotional event at the Templo de Debod and Plaza de Pedro Zerolo, showcasing the quality and variety of products available in Madrid's markets.
