In statements made to the media in Jaén, the deputy secretary of Economy and Sustainable Development of the People's Party (PP), Nadal, expressed concern that Spain has experienced 17 consecutive months of inflation exceeding that of its European counterparts. Current figures indicate a national inflation rate of 4.9%, with harmonised figures for Europe showing a rate of 5%.
Nadal highlighted that inflation in Europe is 1.2 percentage points lower than in Spain, which stands at 3.8%. He remarked, “Something must be going very wrong for our inflation to be so high compared to other European countries. This ultimately results in a loss of purchasing power for families, meaning that the cost of living has increased by more than 40% since Sánchez took office.”
He pointed out that prices for essential items such as meat and eggs have nearly doubled since the current government began. “This particularly affects families with children and those on lower incomes, for whom the cost of living weighs most heavily,” he added.
Nadal also noted that during this period, taxes have been raised significantly, with an additional €200 billion collected since Sánchez's administration began. He mentioned that public debt has surged by €500 billion, which all Spaniards will have to repay, despite receiving unprecedented funds. “The result is not a more productive or investment-driven economy,” he stated.
Before engaging with representatives from various sectors, including promoters, builders, and lawyers at the Jaén Fair, Nadal called for an end to the “isolation” caused by inadequate infrastructure in Jaén and other regions, which contributes to economic disparities across provinces. He emphasised, “Our fundamental goal is to implement economic policies that enhance productivity, improve living standards, and raise salaries. To achieve this, we must create the necessary public and private investments.”
