New scenic viewpoint at l'Alt de la Capa unveiled

The Comú of La Massana has unveiled the final project for the scenic viewpoint at l'Alt de la Capa, a new infrastructure situated at the top of Pal Arinsal, at an altitude of 2,572 metres. This viewpoint is intended as a unique space for enjoying panoramic views, stargazing, and hosting cultural or tourist activities in the mountains.

During the presentation, the head councillor, Eva Sansa, noted that determining the final location was a key aspect of the project, which emerged from a competitive ideas contest. One requirement was that the proposal be adaptable to the chosen site. Ultimately, l'Alt de la Capa was selected for its stunning vistas and existing human activity, including a ski lift and various features at the summit. The aim is to enhance this peak with an intervention that harmonises with the environment.

The new facility will serve a dual purpose as both a viewpoint and a performance space. Its elevation places it among the highest outdoor venues in Europe, presenting new opportunities for cultural events, landscape appreciation, and other activities. As a viewpoint, it will provide a 360-degree panorama and particularly favourable conditions for both daytime scenery and nighttime sky observation, aligning with La Massana's designation as a Starlight Destination.

Tourism councillor Mònica Solé emphasised that the project transcends the traditional concept of a viewpoint, envisioning it as a true mountain stage that combines landscape, astronomical observation, cultural activities, and experiences tied to the region. The seating will allow visitors to focus both on the central performance area and the night sky. The design has been specifically crafted to enhance astronomical observation, with the structure's interior designed to obscure the horizon and direct attention upwards.

Additionally, the Comú is developing a themed path related to cultural heritage, ensuring that the ascent to the viewpoint is part of the overall experience. Details of this route are still being finalised and will be announced later. The goal is to create a comprehensive experience that merges hiking, culture, heritage, and nature.

Architect Antoni Riberaygua, the project's designer, explained that minimising environmental impact was a top priority during the design process. The architectural concept aims for the structure to blend naturally with the mountain, with a single point of connection to the terrain to reduce its footprint. This approach also allows for reversibility, facilitating potential dismantling or relocation if necessary. Furthermore, about 80% of the structure will be prefabricated in a workshop, with only essential work conducted on-site.

The construction will occur in three phases: the first involves on-site foundation work, comparable to that needed for a ski lift pole; the second phase will see the majority of the structure fabricated in winter; and the final phase will involve assembling the pieces on-site, transported by helicopter and fitted together like a large puzzle. The design features a series of circular rings that expand outward to form seating areas. The concave shape of the structure will help shield it from wind, with access provided from the rear through the back ring.

Corten steel will be a prominent material, chosen for its warm, earthy tone that blends well with the rock, as well as its low maintenance requirements. The intention is for the viewpoint to become a distinctive landmark, visible from various points across the country, particularly from Arinsal. The Comú believes it could evolve into an iconic feature of the village, seamlessly integrated into the landscape.

Initial work is expected to commence before the winter season, with much of the structure's fabrication taking place during the winter months, aiming for the scenic viewpoint at l'Alt de la Capa to be inaugurated in time for the following summer season. The awarding of the construction contract will be put to a vote at the next Comú Council meeting, and explanatory panels will be displayed at the Comunal Library for public review.
