The municipality of O Porriño has officially opened the exhibition titled "Mulleres FEMUPO, mulleres que fan Camiño" (Women FEMUPO, women who make the Way), which aims to honour female figures from the province of Pontevedra. The exhibition, organised by the Federation for the Equality of Women in the Province of Pontevedra (FEMUPO), will be on display until 23 October.
The inauguration took place at the Press Room of the O Porriño Town Hall and included a participatory workshop focused on recognising female role models and the importance of highlighting their inspiring journeys for future generations. During the opening, the mayor of O Porriño emphasised the vital role women play in the local community's development. He stated, "Each year, we highlight women role models in the municipality with the 8M recognitions. Many of these women, from rural areas, have distinguished themselves through their work, dedication, and leadership in community life, paving the way for future generations and demonstrating that the development of O Porriño also carries a woman's name."
FEMUPO representatives noted that bringing female role models to the forefront is a crucial step towards transforming society. They highlighted that the project's main objective is to help the community recognise that female role models are present in all areas and are closely connected to the local community.
The initiative, which links equality, territory, and the values of the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James), travels through various municipalities associated with the Portuguese Way and the Portuguese Way by the Coast, combining exhibitions, workshops, and participatory activities. The exhibition is structured across seven informative and interactive panels. The first panel introduces the project, while the next five panels review the different editions of the FEMUPO Women Awards held between 2022 and 2026. The exhibition concludes with a panel featuring QR codes that allow the public to access digital content and explanatory videos about the honorees in areas such as culture, sports, business, administration, and community engagement.
Among the recognitions showcased in the exhibition are Montse and Meis, lace-makers from O Grove who preserve the living heritage of the sea; the female rowing team Veteranas Vila de Cangas; entrepreneur Raquel Touceda from Fresas Touceda in A Estrada; the support and care work of the CIM of A Lama; and the efforts of the Albor Rural Women’s Association from Valga in combating unwanted loneliness in rural areas.
The Town Hall and FEMUPO are calling on local residents, educational centres, and community groups to visit the exhibition throughout this week.
