The second edition of the Senior Week in Torrelavega has successfully concluded after 15 days filled with activities across the city's senior centres. This weekend, the Sergio García Pavilion hosted a closing event that brought together more than 500 participants for a day of community engagement.

Borja Sainz Ahumada, the city's councillor for seniors, emphasised the initiative's growth since its inception last year and praised the contributions of local senior associations. He stated, "We have shared much more than activities: we have created spaces for meeting, strengthened the ties of our community, and contributed to combating unwanted loneliness. Caring for, listening to, and accompanying our elders is also caring for the present and future of Torrelavega."

The closing event featured performances by the Pandereteras from Barrio Covadonga, traditional cocido montañés (a local stew) served to attendees, as well as bingo games, music, and dancing. The event was attended by key municipal figures, including the first deputy mayor, José Luis Urraca, and the second deputy mayor, Pedro Pérez Noriega.

Throughout the two weeks, over 3,000 people participated in various activities, which began on 1 October. Events were held in different civic centres across the municipality, promoting decentralisation and encouraging participation. The programme included musical and theatrical performances by groups such as Los Titiritinos, Los Indianos, Manuel Iberia, and the Teatro Azul Cañadío, among others.

One of the most poignant moments of the week was the opening ceremony on 1 October at the Teatro Concha Espina, where senior associations paid tribute to the Agrupación de Danzas Virgen de las Nieves de Tanos, coinciding with the centenary of their first photograph. Performers included the Rondalla Senior of Torrelavega, the 'Nunca es tarde' choir from the Ramiro Bustamente Senior Centre, and the 'Otoño Musical' choir from the Municipal Home Nieves González in Barrio Covadonga.

Sainz Ahumada highlighted the crucial role of seniors in shaping today's society and praised the Senior Week as a celebration of culture, music, and community. He concluded, "This Senior Week has been a well-deserved tribute to those who represent an essential part of the identity and life of Torrelavega. Our elders have built the foundations of the society we enjoy today and deserve our recognition, respect, and gratitude."
