Piélagos to invest €260,000 in renovation of former Oruña schools

On October 2, 2026, the Piélagos Town Hall announced plans to allocate €260,000 for the renovation of the former schools in Oruña. The project aims to convert the building into a new municipal library, a cultural hall, and a youth space, enhancing accessibility and enjoyment for local residents.

Mayor Carlos Caramés made the announcement during a visit to the site, accompanied by Public Works Councillor César Blanco and local neighborhood representative Mª Ángeles Pérez Hondal. The building is located at the exit of the village towards Polanco, adjacent to the N-611 road.

Caramés explained that following the recent authorization from the State Highways Department, the municipality plans to improve the surroundings of the former schools. This includes creating vehicle access and a small parking area with spaces for individuals with reduced mobility. “We will remove the overhead wiring around the building, burying it instead to enhance the stunning views of the Valle de La Lastra and the surrounding fields,” he stated.

The renovation will also involve replacing the exterior pavement, which has been deemed slippery and hazardous during rain. The plan includes applying printed concrete to the square area. Additionally, the project will utilize the existing space and structure of the 1945 building to create an amphitheater along the front corridor, along with a plaza for public cultural events.

Mayor Caramés also highlighted the provision of essential services in the former schools, including climate control, sanitation, and electrical supply, which were previously lacking. Accessibility will be improved by maintaining the building's aesthetic while replacing existing steps with a ramp at one of the two access points.

“Once again, our government team (PP) is fulfilling our commitment to build a better Piélagos for everyone, through a series of initiatives and investments since June 2023 aimed at improving existing infrastructure and constructing new facilities, such as this library and cultural spaces in Oruña, which will serve not only the residents of this village but the entire municipality,” he concluded.
