With direction by Estrella García and Miguel Quiroga, El lugar de lo inservible will premiere on October 18 at Teatro Jovellanos in Gijón, as part of the Festival Danza Xixón. This production addresses the questions surrounding waste: What happens to what we throw away? Where does everything we discard go?

The performance, which will run from October 11 to 13 at Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura, is part of the Residency Program of the Scenic Resources Center of the Principality of Asturias. Following their previous work, La maleta de Ana, which is included in both the Asturian Circuit of Scenic Arts and the National Circuit of Scenic Arts in Mexico, Proyecto Alicia, a Mexican company, and the Asturian company Meraki Cía. continue their collaboration to co-produce this show.

El lugar de lo inservible is a family-oriented, medium-to-large format production that combines theater, dance, and music. It intertwines themes of environmental pollution with human emotional disconnection, using waste as a metaphor for what society tends to forget. The protagonists embark on a journey to this place of oblivion, where they will discover not only “waste” but also new emotional connections and lost dreams.

The development of this project is supported by collaborations with Zig Zag Danza, the Dramatic Center of Michoacán (CEDRAM) in Mexico, and the Cultural Center of Spain in Mexico. Additionally, it has received co-production support from IBERESCENA 2026 and funding for production and touring from the FMCEYUP subsidies of the Gijón City Council.

Estrella García and Miguel Quiroga serve as choreographers and co-directors, assisted by Naolli A. Eguiarte from CEDRAM and Diego Montero, director of Cía. Córvido Teatro (Mexico). The multidisciplinary work features performances by Paula Castañón, Karen Espinosa, Raisa Robles, and Javier Jarquín, who also contribute to the live music. Zig Zag Danza is responsible for the scenic design, while Miguel Quiroga and Secundino García (Zig Zag Danza) handle the lighting design, and Miguel Puga is in charge of sound design.

The Scenic Resources Center of the Principality is a project based in the Ciudad de la Cultura that provides support for the artistic creation of professional companies in Asturias, offering financial resources, facilities, and technical means to enhance the scenic creation of local professionals.
