The Sagunto City Council has announced that it will maintain the general rate of the urban property tax (IBI) at 0.40% for the year 2027, marking the third consecutive year at this legal minimum. This decision aligns with the national legislation that sets the general legal range for urban properties between 0.40% and 1.10%.
In 2025, Sagunto reduced the general rate from 0.43% to 0.40%, a move that resulted in an annual loss of approximately €910,000 in revenue, aimed at alleviating the tax burden on families. The current municipal tax ordinance reflects this 0.40% rate for urban properties.
This decision positions Sagunto below many municipalities in the Camp de Morvedre region. According to the published urban rates for 2026, Sagunto's rate of 0.40% is lower than Gilet's 0.52%, Faura's 0.57%, Canet d'en Berenguer's 0.60%, Quartell's 0.70%, and Estivella's 0.78%. When compared to similarly sized Valencian cities, Sagunto also stands out; Paterna applies a rate of 0.48%, Torrent 0.49%, and Gandia 0.94%, while Castelló de la Plana is at 0.6362%.
Toni Iborra, the Councillor for Finance, emphasised, “For the third consecutive year, we will maintain the IBI at the minimum allowed by law. This is not just about freezing a tax but keeping it at the lowest level that the City Council can legally set.” He further stated, “When we compare Sagunto with both local municipalities and similar-sized Valencian cities, it is clear that our fiscal policy is restrained. We want the growth of the city and the improvement of public services not to automatically translate into a higher tax burden for families.”
This fiscal policy is being implemented in a context of stability in municipal accounts for the fourth consecutive year. The City Council closed 2025 with a surplus of €5.42 million, a treasury surplus of €5.17 million, a positive net savings of €4.9 million, and a debt level of 28.78% of current income, well below the legal limit.
Iborra concluded, “We can maintain a low tax rate because of responsible economic management. We are approving budgets, increasing investment and services, while also closing financial years with positive results. Our goal is to manage every euro that comes into the City Council with rigor before asking for any additional effort from our residents.”
