San Sebastián accelerates its future planning

The mayor emphasizes the need for significant agreements on three key discussions taking place this month: the Budget, the General Urban Planning Plan, and the General Policy Plenary.

San Sebastián accelerates its future planning

San Sebastián — The mayor of San Sebastián, Jon Insausti, has called for focus amid the upcoming general elections, urging residents to prioritize local challenges over external distractions. He stated, "The noise from outside will not stop this city, which is at a crucial moment for designing its future, as we have accelerated key projects."

Insausti highlighted three important discussions occurring this October that require attention and decisions: the Budget, the General Urban Planning Plan (PGOU), and the General Policy Plenary.

Main Discussions

The mayor described the Budget as a tool to strengthen public services and enhance the quality of life for residents. He expressed a desire to move away from the negative atmosphere coming from Madrid, calling for understanding to achieve sound accounts, maintain a strong economy, and address housing issues. He stated, "This is the most social budget in history, reflecting our commitment to accelerate solutions for those in need, combining humanism and rigor to ensure no one is left behind."

Insausti announced a budget allocation of €17.6 million for elderly care (approximately €348.77 per resident aged 65 or older) and €14 million for individuals facing exclusion (nearly €500 per person).

He reiterated the importance of reaching broad agreements, noting that what is being demanded in other places is already addressed in San Sebastián. The mayor is open to contributions from all political parties and has initiated a round of discussions, inviting amendments.

Insausti expressed hope for a healthy debate free from demagoguery and populism, unaffected by the electoral context. Regarding the General Policy Plenary scheduled for the 14th, he emphasized that, in addition to priority issues like housing and security, it will address daily economic concerns, including the rising cost of living and household economies. He stated, "We cannot afford to waste time and must accelerate measures to support citizens' daily lives."

Finally, concerning the General Urban Planning Plan, Insausti pointed out that there are opportunities in many areas of San Sebastián to improve the city, promote living projects through new housing, create vibrant and connected neighborhoods, and enhance public spaces. He stressed, "It is time to accelerate the processing of the document that will shape San Sebastián for the coming decades, and the drafting of the General Urban Planning Plan is already underway. Now is the moment to agree on this design among all residents, without stopping and without losing time."
