Teruel celebrates Día del Pilar with jota and tradition marking 50 years of Amigos de la Jota

The City Council of Teruel, in collaboration with the Artistic Group Amigos de la Jota, is set to host a series of events to celebrate Día del Pilar, which this year holds special significance as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the group. Approximately 60 participants will engage in various activities, showcasing pieces of Aragonese folklore through singing, dancing, and rondalla, with a particular focus on the jotas from Teruel and those dedicated to the Virgen del Pilar.

Carlos Méndez, the Councillor for Culture at the City Council of Teruel, emphasised the importance of this celebration and expressed gratitude for the group's involvement. He stated, “Día del Pilar is a very special date for our traditions and our culture. This year, we have an additional reason to celebrate, which is the 50 years of Amigos de la Jota, a group that has spent half a century working to keep our jota alive and to pass it on to new generations.”

Méndez also highlighted the collaboration between the City Council and cultural entities in the city. “From the City Council, we want to continue supporting those who work year-round for our culture and traditions. Amigos de la Jota is a magnificent example of that commitment, and we want to thank them for their dedication and contribution to the cultural life of Teruel.”
