Teruel to host seventh gender violence awareness run on 22 November

The city of Teruel is set to host its seventh annual run against gender violence on 22 November, commencing at noon from Plaza del Torico. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the social issue of gender violence, and is organised by the Coordinadora de Organizaciones Feministas de Teruel with the backing of the Teruel City Council.

During a press conference, Jesús Artigot, the city’s sports councillor, encouraged local residents to participate in this important event. He stated, “This is a completely reivindicative cause, and we must all be concerned about ending this massacre so that we no longer have to hold marches or runs for this reason.”

Geles Villarroya, a representative from the Coordinadora de Organizaciones Feministas, explained that the run will feature two non-competitive distances: 2.5 kilometres and 5 kilometres, both starting and finishing at Plaza del Torico. Online registrations are open until 1 November 2026, with participants able to select their t-shirt size. After this date, registrations will remain open until the day of the event, subject to availability and without the option for size selection.

The registration fee is set at €6, which includes a race number, t-shirt, insurance, and refreshments. Payment will be collected during the number pick-up on 17 and 18 November at Pub Flanagan’s in Teruel, from 18:30 to 21:00. Proceeds from the event will be donated to an organisation or project that supports women victims of gender violence. The organisers hope to attract a turnout similar to previous years, which saw over 500 participants.

Event linked to international awareness day

Sonia García, a member of the coordinadora, noted that the run is part of the activities planned for 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. She described gender violence as “a cause that affects us all, a global issue that unfortunately remains one of the greatest injustices faced by women and gender-diverse individuals.”

García emphasised that the primary goal of the run is to demonstrate commitment to eradicating gender violence. “We want every step we take together to be an expression of solidarity with the victims and a call to action.” While specific data on the number of reports in Teruel this year is not available, it has been indicated that national trends are on the rise, suggesting a similar increase locally.

The seventh run against gender violence is organised by the Coordinadora de Organizaciones Feministas de Teruel and sponsored by the Teruel City Council, Caja Rural, and Fundación Térvalis, with additional collaboration from Centro Comercial Abierto, Protección Civil, Comarca de Teruel, and Pub Flanagans.
