The first day of the Jornadas Mendocinas in Guadalajara has been met with enthusiasm from both locals and visitors, aided by pleasant weather. This event, which showcases the legacy of the Mendoza family, will continue tomorrow with additional performances that do not require prior registration.
Organised by the Tourism Department of the Guadalajara City Council in collaboration with the Asociación Gentes de Guadalajara, the Jornadas Mendocinas invite attendees to explore the city's monumental spaces while experiencing theatrical scenes set in the 16th century. The performances have taken place in various historic sites, including the Plaza de Santa María, the Capilla de Luis de Lucena, the Convento de la Piedad, the Palacio de Antonio de Mendoza, and the Palacio del Infantado.
The Cripta del Fuerte de San Francisco has also featured its own performances, providing an opportunity for the public to engage with this unique space through the lens of theatre. The involvement of Gentes de Guadalajara highlights the connection between theatre and the city's historical memory.
These jornadas serve as a precursor to the upcoming XXXVI edition of the Tenorio Mendocino, scheduled for next weekend, which is a distinct highlight within the broader programme.
Upcoming performances
The Jornadas Mendocinas will continue on Sunday, 25 October, with two guided tours departing from the Plaza de Santa María at 11:30 and 12:30. Performances at the Cripta del Fuerte de San Francisco will run continuously from 10:30 to 14:30, accommodating groups of 25 people, with entry via the church of the Fuerte de San Francisco. This event offers a new opportunity to discover Guadalajara through its history, explore its monuments, and witness how theatre brings the past to life.
