UVigo honours women of the sea with exhibitions and conferences

Continuing its tribute to women of the sea, the University of Vigo (UVigo) has launched a new exhibition at the Central Library dedicated to shellfish gatherers, net makers, and workers in the fish processing industry. Additionally, the exhibition 'Oceánicas, pioneers of oceanography' has been moved to the Experimental Sciences building, where it was inaugurated with a talk by Alberto González Garcés, former director of the Oceanographic Centre of Vigo.

During the event, González Garcés paid homage to Ángeles Alvariño, the first Galician oceanographer of international significance. The ceremony was attended by the deans of the faculties of Experimental Sciences. In his speech, González Garcés highlighted Alvariño's importance in marine research and her pioneering spirit, noting that she was the first woman to embark on a British research vessel in 1952.

This tribute to Alvariño is part of a broader recognition of all female marine scientists, many of whom remain largely unknown despite their significant contributions. González Garcés reflected on her strong character, dedication to research and education, and her approachable yet demanding nature in the workplace.

The exhibition 'Un mar de mujeres' (A sea of women), which will be open at the Central Library until 30 October, features a selection of photographs by Mar Caldas, a recent winner of the Galicia Critics' Prize, alongside portraits of women in maritime professions. The display also includes a bibliographic selection on these themes.
