From October 8, 2026, to January 10, 2027, 'Ventanas al Prado', a collaborative project between the Museo del Prado and the Gijón/Xixón City Council, will showcase reproductions of masterworks in the windows of the historic Tabacalera building. The exhibition will be inaugurated on Thursday, October 7, at 8:30 PM with a public event that includes lighting and live music in the nearby Plaza del periodista Arturo Arias.
This initiative, which begins in Gijón and is expected to extend to other cities, aims to promote the Prado's collections and make them more accessible to the public. The iconic Tabacalera building, located in the historic Cimavilla neighborhood, is currently undergoing one of the most ambitious cultural projects in Gijón's history, making it a fitting venue for this pioneering effort to bring art closer to everyday citizens.
The exhibition will feature 29 backlit reproductions from the Museo Nacional del Prado, presented in a context deliberately different from their original settings. This approach invites viewers to deepen their understanding of the paintings, the artists, and the subjects depicted in the works.
The curatorial project is led by the Asturias-based studio La Rectoral, headed by Sara Moro and Ricardo Villoria. 'Ventanas al Prado' will remain on display until January and aims to create a dialogue between two heritages: the industrial memory of a building integral to Gijón/Xixón's identity and the centuries of unique and universal Spanish painting represented in the Prado's collections.
Additionally, a comprehensive program of activities will be organized by the Municipal Culture Foundation in collaboration with the Museo del Prado, targeting educational institutions in the city, as well as a series of lectures. The goal is to engage younger audiences and the wider community with the museum's heritage. A catalog will also be published to accompany the project.
