On October 8, 2026, the Xunta de Galicia approved the concession that will allow the transformation of the Cereixo tidal mill in Vimianzo into an ethnographic museum. According to Ángeles Vázquez, the regional Minister of Environment and Climate Change, this marks the first change of use for one of the elements listed in the Catalog of Cultural Heritage along the coast.
During her visit to the site, Vázquez highlighted that the authorization published today in the Diario Oficial de Galicia allows for the occupation of 201.55 square meters in the public maritime-terrestrial domain (DPMT), representing the first step towards enhancing this cultural heritage element.
The Catalog of Cultural Heritage along the coast was created to facilitate the repurposing of coastal buildings that no longer serve their original purpose and to prevent the abandonment of coastal heritage. Vázquez emphasized that the Catalog represents a "qualitative leap" in the management of coastal cultural heritage, serving as a key tool for identifying, preserving, and revitalizing the listed properties.
It is important to note that the Catalog includes a total of 2,003 cultural assets of various types, with more than half potentially suitable for new uses. All assets are georeferenced and documented with detailed information and images.
The project to convert the Cereixo tidal mill into an ethnographic museum exemplifies the "second life" that these buildings can have. This transformation will preserve a structure of significant cultural value, as it is an architectural and historical gem from the 17th century, while also providing local residents and visitors with a space to learn about the history and traditions related to the sea and coastal life in the region.
The enhancement of coastal cultural assets is one of the initiatives undertaken by the Galician government after it assumed responsibility for coastal management. Since then, the Xunta has advocated for a simpler, more accessible, uniform, and agile management model without compromising environmental guarantees.
Additionally, the Diario Oficial de Galicia also published today the resolution from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change granting another occupancy concession in the municipality of Vimianzo. This authorization allows for the occupation of 1,120 square meters in the Cereixo area, aimed at restoring pedestrian access alongside the DP-1603 road. The intervention will connect the maritime-fluvial promenades of Ponte do Porto and Cereixo through various solutions, including printed concrete paving and landscaped areas.
