A Coruña opens A Eira, a new space for citizen creation and participation at the Sagrada Familia Library

On October 5, 2026, the mayor of A Coruña, Inés Rey, unveiled A Eira, a new space for creation and citizen participation integrated within the Municipal Library of Sagrada Familia. This initiative aims to enhance the services of the municipal library network and strengthen its role as a cultural facility accessible to the community.

During her visit to the new facilities, Rey, accompanied by councilor Montse Paz, emphasized that "today we present new facilities at the Sagrada Familia Library that allow us to continue strengthening the municipal library network as one of the main public services in the city." The mayor highlighted that this new space fulfills a commitment made to the local residents.

"A Coruña now has a pioneering space for cultural creation and innovation integrated within the Sagrada Familia Library. We fulfill a commitment made to the neighbors of Sagrada Familia, who will now have access to cutting-edge cultural facilities," she stated.

The project expands the usable area of the Sagrada Familia Library from 703 to 808 square meters, thanks to the addition of 105 square meters designated for new cultural and community uses. The municipal investment totaled €409,203.98.

A Eira includes a creation space equipped with technological resources and specialized tools, such as a laser cutter, audio and video recording and editing equipment, a sewing machine, and portable welding equipment. These resources will enable the development of diverse projects, including podcast production, independent publishing, artistic creation, and practical skill learning.

Additionally, the new facility features collaborative workspaces for associations, community groups, students, artists, and cultural or social entrepreneurs. The facilities will also host workshops, training activities, and intergenerational meetings.

Open Access for All

A Eira is open to all individuals, groups, and entities with cultural, social, technological, or artistic interests that require spaces and tools to develop their projects. The use of rooms, equipment, and resources will be free of charge, as will the workshops organized by the Municipal Library Network.

The space includes two classrooms with capacities of 30 and 12 people, respectively, and will function as an extension of the Municipal Library of Sagrada Familia, although it will have independent access to facilitate autonomous use by the community.

In the coming months, a specific program will be developed to introduce the new resources to the public, featuring proposals related to radio, cyanotype, sewing, creative printing, laser engraving, and neighborhood memory.

"A Eira is an example of how 21st-century libraries evolve to become spaces for reading, learning, creation, and community engagement. This new infrastructure reinforces the role of municipal libraries as cultural, educational, and social engines of the city. My government continues to improve our network," concluded Inés Rey.
