On October 6, 2026, the Canary Islands' Physical Activity and Exercise Prescription System, known as Activídate, has reached a significant milestone by expanding to ten Active Exercise Units (UAEF) throughout the archipelago. This initiative, jointly promoted by the Ministries of Sports and Health, aims to incorporate physical exercise as a preventive health measure for citizens.
During a visit to the newly added unit in Agüimes, located in the southeastern part of Gran Canaria, Ángel Sabroso, the Vice Minister of Physical Activity and Sports, was accompanied by the municipality's mayor, Óscar Hernández. The visit aimed to observe the unit's operations and the services provided to its initial users.
Since its inception, Activídate has assisted 865 users, and Sabroso expressed optimism about nearing the milestone of 1,000 users across the islands. He emphasized the program's growth and the increasing number of individuals integrating structured exercise into their lives.
Sabroso highlighted the importance of progressively extending the network to reach a broader population, stressing that collaboration between the health and sports sectors, as well as local governments, is crucial for the project's success. He remarked, “Collaboration between institutions is essential for the success of a project that benefits our citizens.”
Mayor Óscar Hernández praised Activídate for showcasing a vital resource for improving citizens' quality of life and emphasized the importance of inter-administrative cooperation to maximize available resources. He noted that the program offers individuals referred from health centers the opportunity to maintain independence and autonomy as they age, deeming it fundamental for community well-being.
Activídate began its operational phase with seven units in September of the previous year and has gradually expanded its reach to ten service points distributed across all islands. Currently, the program has three locations in Tenerife (Añaza with 224 users, Ofra-Las Delicias with 27, and La Laguna-San Benito with nine), two in Gran Canaria (Teror with 170 users and Agüimes with four), and one each in Lanzarote (Tinajo with 160), El Hierro (Frontera with 90), La Palma (Villa de Mazo with 74), Fuerteventura (Gran Tarajal with 66), and La Gomera (San Sebastián with 41).
Activídate is a public, universal, and free service designed to establish physical exercise as a preventive and health-promoting tool through a coordinated model involving health and sports sectors and various public administrations.
