Andalusia government announces new €750,000 funding line for archaeological heritage

On October 2, 2026, the Andalusian Ministry of Culture, Historical Heritage, and Sports announced a new competitive grant program aimed at financing research projects related to the region's archaeological heritage, with a total allocation of €750,000. This initiative was published in the Official Bulletin of the Junta de Andalucía (BOJA, number 192).

The funding, promoted by the General Directorate of Historical Heritage, seeks to enhance knowledge of archaeological heritage in the autonomous community by providing financial support to public universities and research organizations within the Andalusian Knowledge System. The grants will specifically fund archaeological activities that are part of a broader General Research Project (PGI) conducted on municipal or privately owned sites.

Criteria for evaluating applications include the level of protection of the archaeological site, the historical period under investigation, the project's execution status, and the experience and qualifications of the researchers involved. Patricia del Pozo, the Minister of Culture, Historical Heritage, and Sports, emphasized that the grants encourage knowledge generation and research on archaeological heritage, enabling Andalusian municipalities to delve deeper into the study of local sites and leverage archaeological resources to create jobs and economic wealth.

The execution period for funded activities, which encompasses both the archaeological work and its dissemination efforts, will commence upon the publication of the grant award resolution and will conclude 24 months later. However, the resolution may establish a shorter timeframe based on the applicant's proposed duration.

Each funded activity can receive a maximum of €50,000, covering expenses such as researcher salaries, materials and supplies, travel, accommodation, meals, dissemination activities, insurance, audits, and other technical and professional services.

The application submission period will be open from October 5 to October 26. Entities may submit multiple applications, but cannot list the same principal investigator on more than one. If multiple applications include the same principal investigator, only the last submission will be considered. Applications and supporting documents must be submitted electronically through the Single Electronic Registry of the Junta de Andalucía.
